I do not suggest that we ignore the physical and neurological consequences of heavy drinking. But the idea that addiction is a never-ending battle between good and evil where one drink awakens a hidden monster intent on destroying their lives just seems bizarre to me. If there is a monster to be feared, it is usually outrage over mistreatment.
